Andrew Miller

Andrew Miller, a 30 year old German immigrant living in Johnstown, Pennsylvania enlisted in the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry in Philadelphia on February 28, 1862. He was mustered into service on March 4th, and was assigned to Company "M" on March 5, 1862. He was promoted to corporal on June 1, 1863 which he later resigned at the post hospital in Martinsburg, Virginia at the end of 1863. Family history claims he resigned as he did not want to be responsible for other men's' lives. Andrew Miller was wounded in action, and was mustered out at the end of his three year enlistment at Harpers' Ferry on March 6, 1865 collecting a $100.00 bounty and $8.69 from his unused clothing allowance. He returned to his wife and three year old daughter in Johnstown, Pennsylvania where he died in May of 1865 from his wounds. He was buried in Sandyville Cemetery, Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In the early 1960's the City of Johnstown moved to remodel the neglected cemetery. The weathered and unreadable headstones were removed, and the ground cleared and leveled. Andrew Miller now lies in an unmarked grave.
