Richard Buckingham Alley

Color Bearer ensign, in Co. A/F&S Enlisted on 9/10/1861 at Jacksonville. Richard Buckingham Alley (named for a minister in Mont. Co VA) was the son of my grgrgrandfather David L. Alley and his first wife Sophia Altizer Alley...born in 1842. To quote from an article that appeared in the Confedrate Veterean Vol 20, page 231 and again in the Confederate Veteran Vol IX page 53.(with picture) The death of Richard B. Alley occurred on March 6, 1912,. As a Confederate soldier Mr. Alley was distinguished for bravery. The Montgomery (VA)Messenger quoted the following incident from an article in the Veteran which referred to hie courage etc. "in December, 1864, General Forrest engaged the Federals near Mufreesboro, when the onslaught of the enemy was so fierce that the Confederate lines began to waver. See General Forrest, seeing the danger, seized the colors wherever he could rreach them , and carrying them himself tried with them to check the retreat of his men. Riding up to the 54th Virginia Regiment, he said to the color bearer, Richard Alley, "Hand me your flag." Through barefoot, thinly clad and shivering in the December wind, Alley scarcely more than a lad, holding tightly to his flag, replied: "General Forrest, I can take care of my flag, just show me where to put it". Point to some hills crowned with Federal batteries, the General said "Put it there." The flag was planted where ordered, and reinforced by the regiments, the hill was taken. General Forrest never forgot the color bearer of the 54th Virginia Regiment as "That little fellow that totes his own flag." Comrade Alley had been a resident of Montgomery County for over thirty years. Furing a part of this period he taught school at differen places., but in recent years had lived on his farm near Rogers. VA. He is survived by his wife and nine children. A member of the Presbyterian Church for many years , he died in faith of the redeeming grace of Jesus Christ. The funeral was conducted at Union Valley Church by Re. E.E. Lane pastor of the Presbyterian Church aat Christiansburg VA and was largely attended. The burial service at the grave was conducted by the Masonic Order." Richard was married four times.. Fannie Crandall, Jennie Correll, Lydia Correll, Susan Atkins.
