John Bell Corell
Sergeant Company C.

Please note the proper spelling, as Corell is often spelled incorrectly in many records. Down in southwest Virginia, my maternal great great grandfather was John Bell Corell of Montgomery County, Virginia. He was born July 29, 1825 in Montgomery County, VA. He enlisted as a Private on September 10, 1861 in Christiansburg, VA. by Capt. James Taylor in Company C of the 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He soon became very sick on January 1, 1862, but eventually made a full recovery. He worked his way up to the rank of Sergeant and saw quite a bit of action, staying with his unit throughout the duration of the war. After the war, he returned home to Montgomery County, VA and became a farmer. He never regretted his service to the Confederacy and in fact he was quite proud of it. He died April 17, 1920 at the ripe old age of 94.

Corell, John Bell; 1st. Sgt. Company C. Enlisted 9/10/61 at Christianburg, Va.
Sick at Christianburg, Va. as 4th. Sgt. on 1/1/62.
Present as of 12/31/63 as Second Corp.
Resident of Montgomery County, Va. Buried in the John Bell- Corell cemetery, Union Valley, Riner, Montgomery County.
