DICKERSONS OF FLOYD COUNTY VIRGINIA WHO FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR FOR THE SOUTH IN COMPANY A OF THE 54TH INFANTRY

SONS OF MORREL AND ELIZABETH REED DICKERSON

1. CAPT. ANDREW DICKERSON
Andrew Dickerson enlisted on October 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was made Captain of Company A of the 54th Infantry, and was dropped as Captain upon regimental reorganization on May 13, 1962. He was born on September 7, 1819, lived in Floyd County and died on November 21, 1878. He is buried in the Floyd County Lutheran Church Cemetery. His mother, Elizabeth lived to be over 100 year old. He was married first to Levacy Dickerson; their son Dewitt fought in the war and was a prisoner in Camp Douglas, Illinois prison. Andrew was married to his second wife, Elizabeth Olive Sowers Williams in Floyd, Virginia on June 4, 1868.


2. ELIJAH H. DICKERSON
Elijah enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on September 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was present in the army on January 1, 1862, and was in the hospital since November 12, 1863 per the December 31, 1863 Muster Roll. He was missing and wounded in action at Mt.Zion Church, Georgia on June 22, 1864 per one Prisoner of War Record; another indicated he was MWIA at New Hope Church, Georgia and died at Kingston, Georgia hospital on July 3, 1864. He was buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia on July 4, 1864. He was born on January 28, 1828. His wife was Demaris Saunder Williams, and they were married in Floyd County, Virginia on December 7, 1848.


3. RILEY DICKERSON, Sr.
Riley enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on September 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was born December 14, 1822, and married to Sally Rutrough in Floyd County, Virginia on October 11, 1849. He is listed in the censuses as a miller, wagon maker, and farmer.

GRANDSONS OF MORREL AND ELIZABETH REED DICKERSON

1. ANDREW DICKERSON, Jr.
Andrew Dickerson, Jr. enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on September 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He is listed in the 1860 census as age 18 and a field hand. He died in Confederate service in Georgia.


2. BURDINE DICKERSON
Burdine (Berdine) Dickerson enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on October 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was elected 2nd Lt. On May 13, 1862, 1st Lt. on January 30, 1863 and later Captain. He was taken POW on August 20, 1864 near Lovejoy Station, Georgia, sent to Johnson's Island Prison, Ohio and released on oath on June 24, 1865. He was described as 6' tall, dark complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes, and a resident of Floyd County. Burdine was born on November 17, 1838, and died on October 21, 1921 in Floyd County, Virginia. He is buried in Basham Graveyard, Floyd,Virginia. He and his wife, Nancy Sowers were married in 1866. Following the war, he served as Commissioner of Revenue for Floyd County, and was listed on the 1920 Pension list.


3. JOHN DICKERSON, Jr.
John Dickerson, Jr. enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on September 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia, and died in service in Georgia. He was born about 1841 in Floyd County, Virginia.


4. GEORGE RILEY DICKERSON
George Riley Dickerson enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on October 10, 1862 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was missing while in action June 22, 1864 at Mount Zion Church, Georgia. He was a resident of Floyd County, and listed in the 1860 census as 16 years of age, and a hired hand. He was born about 1845, and married Elizabeth Winter in 1866.


SON OF MOSES DICKERSON, JR. AND ELIZABETH WICKHAM DICKERSON

1. AMOS DICKERSON
Amos Dickerson enlisted In Company A of the 54th Infantry on October 10th, 1861 or March 24, 1862 at Richmond, Virginia. His pay for the period from October 31, 1863 to April 30, 1864 was \\$72. He is listed in the 1860 Floyd County Census as being 28 years of age, and a farmer worth $1000. Following the war he was a Primitive Baptist Minister of the New River District, as well as serving 2 terms in the Virginia House of Delegates. He is listed on the 1920 Pension list for Floyd County. His first wife was Mary Ann Slusher, and they were married November 20th, 1850. He died on February 20, 1920, and is buried in the Sumpter Cemetery, Floyd County, Virginia.


SON OF MOSES DICKERSON, JR. AND NANCY REED DICKERSON

1. EARLY DICKERSON
Early Dickerson was a 2ndLt. Company A of the 54th Infantry, and enlisted on October 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was present on the rolls thru at least May 1, 1864. He was born on August 17, 1822 and died on February 15, 1887. Early is buried in the Sumpter Cemetery, Floyd County, Virginia. His wife was Susan Williams, and they were married on November 21, 1844. He was half brother to Amos Dickerson, and Uncle to William and George and Capt. Darius Sowers.


SON OF CAPTAIN ANDREW AND LEVACY DICKERSON

1. DEWITT DICKERSON
Dewitt Dickerson enlisted in Company A of the 54th Infantry on an unknown date. He was taken prisoner of war on July 20, 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia and sent to a Camp Douglas, Illinois prison where he was held until discharged on oath on June 16,1865. He was married to Mary Fisher in 1873.


SONS OF MORREL DICKERSON AND NAOMI MORRICLE DICKERSON

1. HARVEY DICKERSON
Harvey Dickerson was a 1st Corp. in Company A of the 54th Infantry, and enlisted on September 10, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was wounded while in action at Chickamauga on September 15, 1863, and taken Prisoner of War at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia. He was sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois, and released on oath. Harvey is described as having a fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5'6" tall, age 21 and a farm laborer. He was born on February 16, 1839, married to Octavia Simmons on May 7, 1867, and died on May 15, 1912 in Floyd County, Virginia. He is buried on his property.


2. WILLIAM MORRICLE DICKERSON
William Dickerson was a 4th Sgt. Company A of the 54th Infantry, and enlisted on September 1, 1861 at Jacksonville, Virginia. He was present on December 31, 1863 and surrendered at Columbus, Georgia on February 22, 1864. He took the oath at Nashville, Tennessee on May 22, 1865. He is described as having a dark complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5'6" tall. Post war records show that he served for 4 years. In the 1860 census he is age 23. He appeared in the 1920 Pension List. He was born on April 4, 1837, married to Miriam Wade on December 14, 1865 in Floyd County, Virginia and died on March 6, 1929. He is buried in the Greasy Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Burk's Fork, Floyd, Virginia.


All of the above were my first or second cousins, or uncles generationally removed.
