John A. Hudgins
John A. Hudgins was born in Virginia in November, 1840. He enlisted in
Co.
C, 54th VA Inf., Capt. James Craig Taylor's Co. in September, 1861 at
Christiansburg, Montgomery County, VA. He was about 21 years old and
he
served "until the close of the war". Just after the war, at the age of
26,
he married Victoria A. Walters and they had five children. They were married 15 April
1867. They
lived
in Montgomery County until just before 1900 when they moved to Tazewell
County. According to his 1905 application - made in Tazewell County -
for a
Virginia Confederate pension he was a farmer "all my life". He made
the
application based on the revised 1902 pension claim law and on the
basis
that he had "fallen from a horse in 1898" which left his right shoulder
injured ("stoved up") and caused him to have lost most of the use of
his
right arm. He stated further that he had fallen "on the ice and brook
(sic)
my wrist and my feet is give out so I can't hardly walk on them". His
claim
noted that he depended on his sons to do most of the farm work. He is
included in the 1909 Tazewell County Confederate Pension List with the
notation (1902). His wife, Victoria, died in 1925. John A. Hudgins
died in
1929. They are both buried in Bluefield, WVA. .
