John Braxton Newberry
Born on: January. 7th.1843
Died: April 9th. 1927

Enlistment date: October 1, 1861 at Jacksonville,(Floyd County), Va.
Unit no. 815
Enlisted as a Private in Company H ,54TH.Virginia Infantry Regiment
Capt. Sparel H. (W). Griffith , Company Commander
Col. Robert C.Trigg , Col. of the Regiment

According to family history passed down through time, he served at:The First and Second Battle of Manassas, Battle of Gettysburg, and was discharged out at the surrender. He was hospilitaliized on Dec.1,1863 at White Sulphur Springs,WV. with an unknown illness. He was directed to go home ( by his Commander at the time) and return when he was over his illness. He did so and stayed till the end of the war.He was at the surrender ceremonies at Appomatox County Court House. He returned to Abington ,Va. on the train and from there he walked to his home at Blowing Rock,Va., taking two or three days and sleeping in barns on the way there.

He served with"Distinguished Service",according to his discharge papers. After his death, his widow Pernetti Ann Newberry, attempted to draw a pension and was told that due to his appearing as AWOL from the hospital, the pension request was denied.Aparently record keeping was lax at the time. After several repeated attempts, including the filing of an affidavit was she successful. She drew a pension of $29.00 until her death on the 10th.of Oct.1935. He drew a pension until his death on April 9th.1927 also.
