John Harvey Gearhart
John Harvey Gearhart was born in Floyd County, Va. in Jan. 1843. He married Massie Mahalia Wilson on Aug. 20, 1868. They had 8 children. According to copies of Company Muster Rolls, he enlisted on Oct.1, 1861 in Jacksonville, VA. in company I. He was a resident of Floyd County, born at Copper Hill in Floyd County, ca. 1843. He lived in Floyd County postwar. Also, he and several other men deserted the Confederate army on Feb. 10, 1865 and walked home from North Carolina, "knowing their cause was lost". He later became a successful farmer and landowner of 2000 acres of land. He also obtained a permit to make and sell whiskey and brandy. He died of Tuberculosis in 1900.

I would like to thank Janice Stiff for the information about John Harvey Gearhart .
