Harrison Sutphin
Private Company D.

Harrison Sutphin of Floyd County, Virginia. He was born April 16, 1846. He enlisted in 1861 at the tender young age of 15 at Floyd, VA. He was enlisted as a Private and assigned to Company D of the same 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Whether he knew John Bell Corell at that time is unknown. He probably lied about his age being older to enlist. Although young, it was not uncommon for teenage boys to enlist in service to the Confederacy, especially if they looked older, could march and shoot well, and could get their parents agree to it. Very little detail is known of Harrison, except that he survived all four years of the war serving in the 54th VA, and returned home miraculously without a scratch to Floyd County to be a farmer, married Allie Creighton Sutphin, and they had several children. Harrison died on April 12, 1917 in Floyd County at the age of 70. He was very proud of his service to the Confederacy and his obituary mentions this.
